Scientific history of Lucid Dream

The first book to recognize the scientific potential of lucid dreams was Celia Green's 1968 study Lucid Dreams. Green analyzed the main characteristics of such dreams. She reviewed previously published literature on the subject, and incorporated new data from subjects of her own. She concluded that they were a category of experience quite distinct from ordinary dreams, and predicted that they would turn out to be associated with rapid eye movement sleep (REM sleep). Green was also the first to link lucid dreams to the phenomenon of false awakenings.

In the early 1970s, Daniel Oldis of the University of South Dakota leveraged the scientific principle of external sensory incorporation in an attempt to influence dream content and evoke lucidity. Three psychological techniques were employed: subconscious suggestion using a tape played before and during sleep; associative signaling using a muffled bell alarm timed to go off during REM sleep; and classical conditioning using a REM detection circuit and a bright eye-light. The results indicated that lucid dreaming can be facilitated using external cues and psychological methods.

Philosopher Norman Malcolm's 1959 text Dreaming had argued against the possibility of checking the accuracy of dream reports. However, the realization that eye movements performed in dreams affected the dreamer's physical eyes provided a way to prove that actions agreed upon during waking life could be recalled and performed once lucid in a dream. The first evidence of this type was produced in the late 1970s by British parapsychologist Keith Hearne. A volunteer named Alan Worsley used eye movement to signal the onset of lucidity, which were recorded by a polysomnograph machine.

Hearne's results were not widely distributed. The first peer-reviewed article was published some years later by Stephen LaBerge at Stanford University, who had independently developed a similar technique as part of his doctoral dissertation. During the 1980s, further scientific evidence to confirm the existence of lucid dreaming was produced as lucid dreamers were able to demonstrate to researchers that they were consciously aware of being in a dream state (again, primarily using eye movement signals). Additionally, techniques were developed which have been experimentally proven to enhance the likelihood of achieving this state. Research on techniques and effects of lucid dreaming continues at a number of universities and other centers, including LaBerge's Lucidity Institute.

Sleep and Dreams

Many spiritual or soulful traditions have considered dreams as a source of information and wisdom. The Old Testament has numerous stories that involve dreams as prophecy, predicting the future. Perhaps the best known is the tale of Joseph of the amazing technicolor coat, sold into slavery in Egypt, who was able to correctly interpret the dreams of the Pharaoh of seven fat and seven thin cows as a foretelling of seven fertile years to be followed by seven years of drought. His interpretation set the course for Egypt's grain strategy whereby it was not impacted by the seven-year drought. The tradition of Islam is built upon words of their fundamental scripture, the Koran, which came to their prophet, Mohammed, in a series of wrenching sleep dreams. For these scriptural traditions, dreams were a way for God to speak to lowly man.

Native spiritual traditions the world over have viewed sleep dreams as voices from a transpersonal source, be it a god or goddess, a spirit or the earth itself. Shamans journeyed in dreams to supernatural realms, where they found banes to bring back to the tribe. For Australia's aboriginals, dreams are the ongoingly living essence of all creation. For them, the world dreamed itself and mankind into being. Humans can and must know these dreams in order to continually re-create the physical universe through songs and songlines. Dreamtime understands the entire world as emanating from dreams.

In the scientific age, sleep dreams have been explained as simply a function of brain chemisty or brain electrical circuitry, pereforming, at best, the function of flushing out waste or sorting out waking experiences, and, at worst, no function whatsoever. Sigmund Freud, who was the Viennese doctor who reconnected modern Western humans with dreams as significant events, explained them as part of an unconscious psychological mechanism that disguises and suppresses humans' all-encompassing, yet dangerous, sexual desires, but that has no other value. Carl Jung, Freud's protege for a while, understood dreams to have intrinsic value. He too conceptualized that they come from the unconscious of dreamers and serve the function of facilitating growth. For Jung, sleep dreams are meaningful, balancing waking attitudes, and their message is to be brought into consciousness. He postulated that sleep dreams speak in a symbolic language with the purpose of helping guide individuals to becoming fuller and more complete, "individuated."

We have found that approaching sleep dreams with the assumption that they are meaningful is most useful. Conceptualizing sleep dreams as emanations from the unconscious, both individual and collective, allows a dreamer to understand dreams as information from an internal wellspring of not-rationally attained information. Coming from "inside" the individual, they can be a guide to constructing a meaningful life that is not dependent upon sources outside the individual. Springing not from the conscious mind, sleep dreams are irrational and balance the limitations of the mind.

How To Sleep In Sleeping Bag

Imagine how difficult it would be for these people to sleep during their overnight camping trips if they only have a sleeping bag to lay into. Sleeping bags are ergonomically designed; it is soft and not hard on the back so why is it that some people are having difficulty sleeping in those things?

One theory is that the problem maybe located within the conscious mind of the person the brain of the person must have dictated to the body that sleeping bags are not comfortable; the person then will respond to the suggestion of brain therefore he or she will find it uncomfortable to sleep in sleeping bags. The cause of the problem is psychological; to solve the problem one must look within and change his or her manner of thinking. It is simply mind over matter. If you keep on saying to yourself again and again that Sleeping bags are comfortable, it will become automatic, your body will respond to your manner of thinking, and then you will now find yourself sleeping comfortably in sleeping bags , it will be like as if you are sleeping in your own bed.

Another way of solving your problem is to visualize that you are lying on your own bed whenever you are lying on the sleeping bags. Imagine how comfortable you are as you are lying on the sleeping bag, close your eyes visualize that you are in your own room, your head resting comfortably on top of your pillow, remove every stress that you are feeling by completely relaxing your body, let go of all the uncomfortable feelings that you are currently experiencing, you will then feel at peace with your environment, at peace with nature, and then you will now be comfortable lying on your sleeping bag. Again it is mind over matter, it just goes to show that the human brain can and will solve any problem that a person may encounter in his or her life.

Nothing beats sleeping in the comfort of your own bed; you feel safe and sound whenever you are lying on your bed. The problem is that you cannot bring your bed if you are outdoors on a camping trip, but the good thing is that there are outdoor gears like the sleeping bag that is designed specifically so that people can feel comfortable whenever they are sleeping outdoors. It is up to you to make certain adjustments and do the things mentioned in this article if you do not feel comfortable enough. After all lying in sleeping bags is much comfortable than lying on the ground.

What is a Dream?

Diposting oleh amnom | 07.14

Dreams are a communication of body, mind and spirit in a symbolic communicative environmental state of being. That's it! Now that you are thoroughly confused let me explain in a more down to earth language. Our brains are in constant activity. Different states of consciousness (like awake, asleep, alert, drowsy, excited, bored, concentrating or daydreaming) cause different brain wave activity. Our conscious mind, or the part we think with, our "window" into life, only takes up a very small portion of our brain activity. (some say this is only 10%) Other areas control things like breathing, heartbeat, converting light to vision, sound to hearing, balance when we walk, etc. etc. This too has it's own percentage (small). Another area controls imagination. This area is widely an undiscovered frontier. Imagination is more then dreaming of a new car or picturing someone with their cloths off! When you look at clouds and see shapes, or wood grain and see images, this is the "order from chaos" part of your imagination. The mind cannot deal with chaos very well, in fact it will resist it and sometimes manufacture order. (very important to the dreaming process.)This too occupies a small percentage of brian activity. Then there is memory. Memory is vast! And I believe it occupies more of the brains resources then most people believe.

And then there is the activity called dreaming. I think that to a certain extent, we dream all the time. Even while awake! But the process is functioning in our subconscious mind, out of view from our "window". If defined precisely, they may not be referred to as dreams technically, but the activity is very closely related. During certain cycles of brain activity while asleep, we can "view" these dreams with our conscious mind and record them in our memory. (this is why we sometimes remember them).
OK, it's enough, let's stop dreaming start action
